Altea, a coastal town in the Valencian Community on Spain’s Costa Blanca, is known for its whitewashed old town and the blue-tiled domes of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, but its past runs far deeper. Iberian settlements at the mouth of the Algar were followed by a Greek marketplace called Althaia, then Roman presence and centuries of Muslim rule before James I of Aragon reconquered the area in 1244. Today that layered history and long artistic streak are written into the hilltop Casco Antiguo—all cobbled lanes and white façades crowned by the church’s iconic domes with sweeping Mediterranean views.

Useful tips
Parking: We discovered a free parking spot here.
Food: We didn’t eat in Altea on this visit, so no personal picks from us. If you’re looking for a bite, you’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants around the church square in the Casco Antiguo and along the seafront promenade—good for anything from a quick snack to a sit-down dinner with a view.
Internet: We got a SIM card from Spain Sur for around €50, and it had plenty of data for us.
Crowdiness: Altea felt relaxed when we visited—hardly any crowds. Around the blue-domed church and the Glorieta del Maño there was plenty of space to wander and take photos.
Driving in the City: In Altea we drove in without trouble—just take it slow through the old town’s narrow lanes and mind any access-restricted signs. We left the car at the free lot, which is an easy walk up to the Casco Antiguo.
